President's Report of April 2018

Was my life a good one”? People our age sometimes ask themselves that question. How should a person measure one-self over a lifetime? There are probably as many answers to the question as there are people.

Many people gauge self-worth in terms of money made and stored away in their investment accounts, like a pile of electronic chestnuts gathered by investment squirrels. Did I make the ‘one percent’ with five houses and a car collection, a cigarette speed-boat, a photo-genic spouse (even if the third or fourth), vacations in France, etc.? Of course, how much is enough, is an open question. Enough is never enough for some. Is a successful life based upon how happy one feels? Superficially, that is attractive---but then what is happiness? It is a slippery word when you try to pin it down. Is happiness a constant, giddy sense of joy? Surely no one lives life without sorrows, and sorrows can stack up over time. Or is happiness more a sense of satisfaction of believing one has generally made more good life decisions than bad?

I don’t know. It does seem that people who are consistently happy self-generate their own happiness. They carry the feeling around with them like an umbrella held up against dark clouds.

I do know from my own life-experience that giving to others brings joy. “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion,” said the Dalai Lama. Ben Stein, a successful investor and very wealthy man, in his last column before retirement, expressed a similar thought. And recent clinical experiments confirm that people who serve others or make gifts to others experience pleasurable hormone releases in the brain---Google it!

Something to consider for our Scholarship Fund drive in April?
Giving is a nice way to self-medicate!

NEVER STOP SERVING
